11/13/2023 0 Comments Hogwarts legacy websiteMany of the products I can buy, and need to buy to survive, are produced under conditions I find to be unethical either because their production and transportation is environmentally destructive, labor rights are non-existent, or both. Some of them no doubt have views I would find horrendous, or are guilty of abusive behavior. There are numerous people involved with the development of a game, just as there are with music or movies. It's frustrating that the effort to affect social change is so often channeled into stances that are almost entirely symbolic. We just can't choose one totemic product for everyone to lay their claim on where they stand and then move on. Things that often either negatively impact other people or the very least take advantage of economic inequalities. We consume and purchase products from ethically dubious companies all the time. If reviewers and consumers are to wrestle with the morality of those who stand to gain from their purchases then there needs to be a wider reckoning, not just one because it's the debate that's captured the imagination.Īnd I am not saying it would be wrong for such debates to be more common. JK Rowling is not the first or last person perceived to be problematic that will get your money when you buy a game or other work of art. I have no issue if people feel they take a personal stance to boycott this game because of Rowling or if they don't want to do that.īut I don't think the topic of separating from where the money will eventually go is limited to this game and this moral principle could well prove very tricky.
